NFPA: Home Fire Sprinkler Demonstration

A side-by-side room display set up at the Plymouth Massachusetts Fire Department. Sprinklers had been installed in only one of the rooms. Both rooms were set on fire. Home fire sprinklers are designed to activate when a certain degree of heat increase is reached, so as the temperature in the display went up, the sprinklers went off. As seen in this demonstration, the fire in the sprinklered room was controlled quickly by overhead sprinklers. In contrast, the fire in the room without sprinklers burned out of control until the fire department put out the fire.

Solar Decathlon: Empowerhouse

After several years of planning, design and construction, a team of students from The New School and Stevens Institute of Technology who participated in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon celebrated the completion of Empowerhouse, an innovative model for affordable, energy efficient green housing located in the Deanwood neighborhood of Washington. Developed in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. (DC Habitat), and the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), the project marks the first time in the Solar Decathlon's history that a team partnered from the outset with civic and government agencies to create a house specifically for a local D.C. community. It is the first Passive House—the leading international energy standard—in the District of Columbia, and already a recipient of a Mayor's Sustainability Award.

World Record 2013 - Tightest Residential Building - Dillingham, Alaska

This video was created during the World Record setting blower door test of the Tightest Residential Building. The video documents the actual blower door test performed to verify the air tightness of this extremely energy efficient building (0.05 ACH @ 50 Pa). The house was designed and built beginning in 2010 by Sustainable Energy Asst. Professor Tom Marsik and his wife Kristin Donaldson. The house was built using advanced green building methods and was modeled after the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Bristol Bay Campus's experimental structure known as the Passive Office.
