Who said that conferences and building science education need to be dull?

 
To create a bit of excitement to Greenbuild this year, BASF is hosting the BASF Building Science Smackdown at booth 201. Each day the highest scoring player will receive a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad.

The games will occur at the top and bottom of the hour, with three players per game challenged with questions in areas that include the building envelope, energy factoids, building science acronyms, LEED, sustainability facts and durability to name a few. Several of the nation’s leading building science experts will host the game:

Steve Easley, principal, S. C. Easley & Associates, is an internationally recognized construction consultant specializing in solving building science related problems and educating building industry professionals and their trade partners. Steve has also co-hosted hundreds of television and radio programs, including over 100 shows on the Discovery Channel's Your New House.

Steven Winter, FAIA, is the founder of Steven Winter Associates, a leading research/design firm specializing in energy efficient and sustainable housing. Winter is the past Chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council® and of the LEED for Homes Committee. His work has been widely published; and has won numerous awards and citations.

Deane Evans, FAIA currently directs the Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, a multi-disciplinary research and technical assistance center focused on improving the performance of buildings and communities. Evans is the founding director of the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH)program at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Peter Yost brings more than 25 years experience in building, researching, teaching, writing, and consulting on high-performance homes to his twin roles as director of residential services for BuildingGreen, and technical director for GreenBuildingAdvisor. His expertise stretches from construction waste management and advanced framing to energy efficiency and building durability.

Fernando Pagés speaks around the world on how to build high-quality, affordable and energy-efficient homes. A builder with 30 years experience who has won national green building awards and the author of Building an Affordable House and Affordable Remodel, he is also an expert on building for the multicultural community.

Charlie Popeck is a recognized authority and leader in the field of sustainability and green building. As President and founding Principal of Green Ideas Environmental Building Consultants , Charlie is sought after as an expert in LEED, the Green Building Rating System developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). A licensed California General Contractor, Charlie has held senior management level positions for general contractors, manufacturers and architectural firms.

Sara Gutterman, Chief Executive Officer & Group Publisher of Green Builder® Media, consults with corporations and communities to develop them into enterprises that are both sustainable and profitable. She assists organizations in developing strategies for sustainability-related issues, including “greening” product lines, resource conservation, green building, environmental protection, and conservation strategies.

Ron Jones, Founder and Editorial Director of Green Builder Media, is considered to be one of the fathers of the green building movement. Ron has been instrumental in setting guidelines and standards with the two largest organizations in the building industry, the National Association of Home Builders and the U.S. Green Building Council In fact, he is the only person ever to serve as a member of the Boards of Directors for both of these organizations.

Michelle Clark Hucal, senior editor of ED+C magazine and Sustainable Facilities was the first magazine editor to earn a LEED AP distinction via exam. Named on Crain’s Detroit “40 Under 40” in 2006 and in their 2008 “Women to Watch,” report, Michelle has been a driving force in helping to make BNP Media titles earn industry respect and accolades like the “Sustainable Practices Award for Communication” from the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council.
