Q&A
Q1: When a new homeowner buys a house with an existing solar panel lease can they just take over the lease?
A1: Yes. There is a simple one-page document used to transfer the solar lease to the new homeowner.
Q2: Are there any charges for transferring the lease to a new owner of a home?
A2: No. It is free to make the transfer.
Q3: When energy is collected and unused, what happens to it? Does the credit go to the user or the energy/power provider?
A3: The homeowner gets credit for unused energy. A meter keeps track of all the power the solar system produces. Any solar energy that is not used is sent back to the utility electric grid (The DWP in Los Angeles County). This causes the electric meter to spin backwards crediting the DWP electric bill for unused power.
The SunRun lease used at VISION House Los Angeels has an energy production guarantee. If the system produces less, the homeowner is reimbursed the difference, if the system produces more than expected the homeowner benefits from the extra power.
Q4: If the homeowner wants to purchase the solar, how much will it cost?
A4: If the homeowner decides to purchase the solar system the cost would be calculated based upon fair market value at that time. If they purchase the system they won't get 20-years maintenance, monitoring, insurance and the production guarantee.
