The Magic of Storytelling: Bringing Sustainability to Life
Join Green Builder® Media as we interview one of the nation’s greatest storytellers, Joe Tankersley, head Imagineer for Walt Disney World® Resorts, to explore how the magic of storytelling can contribute to a more sustainable future. In this interview, Mr. Tankersley will discuss the craft of developing and relaying powerful messages to connect with people in meaningful and long-lasting ways.
Joe joined Walt Disney Imagineering in 1996. He has worked on projects for Epcot®, Magic Kingdom® Park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park, Disney’s Hollywood Studios™, and Disneyland® Resort. During much of his Walt Disney Imagineering career he has applied his skills as a writer and storyteller to projects featuring innovative interactive technologies.
From 1998 to 2000, Joe was lead writer for the team that created the Millennium Village in World Showcase, at Epcot®. Designed to be the flagship of the Walt Disney World® Resort’s Millennium celebration, the project shared stories of hope and harmony for the new century from more than two-dozen different countries. During its 18 month run, Millennium Village was awarded a THEA, the highest honor in the Theme Park Industry, for its innovative blending of storytelling and interactive experiences.
Since 2002, Joe has led creative teams developing new projects for Innoventions at Epcot®. With these teams, he has continued to explore the boundaries of interactive storytelling and experience. A unique feature of these projects has been the commitment to combine great entertainment with important themes like financial literacy, fire safety and natural disaster preparedness.
Prior to joining Walt Disney Imagineering, Joe worked as a screenwriter and media producer. His projects covered a wide range of topics and media, from documentary and feature films to educational and public broadcasting programming. Joe graduated from Emory University with a B.A. in Literature and Florida State University with a Masters degree in Mass Communication.
