Mark Aspenson, national sales director for Thermal Building Concepts, is somewhat of an evangelist for Thermal 3Ht, a three-in-one insulation. It is an air and vapor barrier, radiant barrier, and thermal insulation
In any wall system, the transfer of heat by radiation is on average 65% of the problem, convection is 25% and conduction is 10% or less. Thermal 3Ht addresses all three forms of heat transfer and moisture. When used as a continuous external sheathing to envelope a building enclosure, Thermal 3Ht provides the needed thermal breaks thereby enhancing the performance of the cavity fill and provides the added three-in-one attributes of Thermal 3Ht.
The product comes in rolls, fanfold, and sheets either reflective/reflective or reflective/white. The EPS core and reflective metalized polyester laminate “Mylar-like” reflective facer makes for a winning combination. The polypropylene reinforced white facer can be used for adverse or exposed conditions. The facers are heat-bonded not glued.
When taped and tightly sealed, in combination with proper mechanicals or air exchangers and other recommended energy saving practices, Thermal 3Ht provides the potential of using 1/6 the energy of conventional insulation construction.
Mark said both in-house and third party research test data (ASTM 1363-05 wall system tests) support the high- performance concept of Thermal 3Ht in real world conditions.
