The idea of mixing coal fly ash and other post-industrial slag into concrete is nothing new. The U.S. government began using fly ash in dams and other projects in the 1940s. But it’s good to see large companies such as Quikrete now offering a “green” concrete mix that replaces 50% of the usual mix with recycled materials. If you’re wondering what the incentive is to buy these products over conventional concrete, fly ash advocates note that you can earn up to 5 LEED points by including the stuff in various parts of the home—although it doesn’t earn any points on its own.
