Think about how the typical electric hot water heater works. As hot water leaves the top of the tank, ice cold water replaces it—and has to be heated from cold to hot. That’s why heat pump water heaters such as the new GE Hybrid make so much sense. They extract the heat from the air around the hot water tank and preheat that water, greatly reducing the fossil fuel energy required to get it to shower-ready. GE designed the tank to fit in the footprint of the old 50 gallon units that are so common, so it’s an easy retrofit when electric tanks fail. It was also the first Energy Star–rated hybrid.
