ReVISION House Vegas Details

1/1/2010 (updated 8/2010)

ReVISION Vegas is part of Green Builder Media’s renowned VISION House demonstration program.  It is a research and training program designed to showcase the full spectrum of green retrofit technologies and home performance upgrades.

In conjunction with Building Media, Inc., Green Builder Media introduced ReVISION Vegas at the International Builders Show 2010. With the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Department of Energy (DOE ) and their Building America Teams are developing ways to rapidly expand the number of home energy retrofits each year. With new home construction still projected to be under half a million homes, new home builders and remodelers need to harness the business opportunities home performance retrofits offer.

ReVISION Vegas is a home performance research and training program that introduces builders, remodelers, designers, and consumers to the fastgrowing field of weatherization and home performance makeovers. ReVISION Vegas demonstrates energy saving and sustainable solutions in two made-over 1960’s-styled homes, conveniently located just minutes from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Together with Building Media, Inc., Green Builder Media retrofit the homes to address energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environment quality, green materials, durability, and operations and maintenance.

The project explores the latest innovations in home performance remodeling, including the “house as a system” model, the use of energy saving and environmentally friendly products, and the integration of onsite power systems to achieve “net zero energy homes.”

Steven Winter & Associates, one of the nations most respected home performance researchers and Building American teams, documents the two similar 1960’s houses can achieving a 30% Weatherization Plus upgrade and a 70% Energy Makeover upgrade. Steven Winter & Associates produced white papers on how different product categories helped to improve the overall sustainability of the homes.

Throughout the ReVISION Vegas program, Green Builder Media will tracked the progress, process and costs of green retrofits, using the data for extensive editorial coverage in Green Builder magazine, the Green Builder Vantage enewsletter, and to develop a new Deep Energy Retrofit Track on the Green Builder College online learning platform. The team will developed a cost/benefit analysis for the two homes and provided a value-based, online “decision-tree” tool that building professionals can use in their green retrofit projects. Extensive project videos generated during the project will continue to be used to create a library of certified, skills-based training on Green Builder College.

The project will be used as an educational vehicle for onsite and online training. The educational opportunities surrounding ReVISION Vegas will help remodelers learn to reduce construction time and waste, implement innovative energy and material-saving technologies, and improve profitability. Presented as a home performance “Exploratorium,” ReVISION Vegas offers visitors an interactive tour of the remodeling process.

Green Builder Media and BMI have created a multiple-media video tour that explains the transformation of the original houses into energy-efficient, comfortable and sustainable homes. The ReVISION Vegas case study is hosted on www.greenbuildermag.com, and an in-depth, step-by-step training course will be developed for Green Builder College at www.greenbuildercollege.com.

The ReVISION House Vegas project received a -2 HERS rating, which means that it generates more energy than it uses.  See the U.S. Department of Energy’s EnergySmart Home Scale below for the details.
