Masco’s Verve offers wireless, battery-less lighting control.

I happen to be a person who thinks that too much technology can make life a little too complicated. But after going through the demonstration of the new Verve Living Systems at the show, I had to give the system a thumb’s up for three reasons.

First, it’s not complicated. Second, it’s not expensive. And, third, it uses a battery-less control and a green energy-harvesting technology, which essentially transforms the energy from the mechanical movement of turning the switch on to a radio frequency signal.

The core Verve Living System—including the 10-channel controller, single light switch, and a double light switch—offers new-home buyers comfort features through simple controls. Verve switches are movable, to accommodate the individual needs of the home buyer. Switches can be programmed to control receptacles offering lamp control as well as a means to completely shut-off miscellaneous electric loads, the electric power consumed by small electronics while they are switched off or in standby mode.

In addition, every switch can be used as a dimmer for energy savings and to enhance the home environment. The system also allows homeowners to easily program scenes enabling them to create the exact ambiance they want.

Verve is a new-home, versus retrofit option, because part of the cost savings is that the system eliminates the need for wiring between light fixtures and switches. Installation costs and complexity are reduced, along with copper wiring, wall boxes, wire nuts, and conduit associated with the switches. With no three- or four-way wiring, the number of electrical connections is reduced, lowering installation time and eliminating callbacks to add, move, or re-wire light switches. www.vervelivingsystems.com
