LP FlameBlock Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing was a hit with builders at the show because it offers two features: structural strength and burn-through fire resistance. (Check out the video and pdf illustrating its ability to slow fire at www.lpcorp.com.)
Just as important, the process that makes the product resist burning is green: a non-combustible, environmentally friendly, non-hazardous Pyrotite coating, which delivers a 20-minute thermal barrier. The product is Exposure-1 rated to withstand weather during normal construction delays and is available in a variety of PS1-rated thicknesses and lengths.
Does it cost more? I asked a rep. She called it “cost competitive” with other sheathing options, noting that the fact that it is an all-in-one structural and fire protection panel means reduced material costs overall. More green pluses include the fact that the panels are make of SFI certified wood. The company uses only small, fast-growing trees, and the entire log is consumed in the manufacturing process. The product is backed by a 20-year transferable limited warranty.
